What is a Fitzpatrick Skin Type?
The Fitzpatrick Skin type Scale is a popular classification system to measure the skin's tolerance to sunlight. It is used by dermatologists and aestheticians and scientists to determine reactions to products. In this case, it is used to better understand which pigment colours and undertones are best suited to skin colour.
The following list shows the six categories of the Fitzpatrick scale:
- Type 1 always burns, never tans (palest; freckles).
- Type 2 usually burns, tans minimally
- Type 3 sometimes mild burn, tans uniformly
- Type 4 burns minimally, always tans well (moderate brown)
- Type 5 very rarely burns, tans very easily (dark brown)
- Type 6 never burns (deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown)
