According to statistics, around 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK (Breast Cancer Now, 2018). This form of cancer in the most common type of cancer in the UK (NHS, 2018) and over 99% of new cases are in women with roughly 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer in their lifetime (Breast Cancer Care, 2018). October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month and here at The Clinical Academy, we want to raise awareness and money for such an important charity.
At the academy, we teach a range of Permanent Makeup and Medical Tattooing ABT Accredited courses which not only involve scar and camouflage cover but in particular Areola reconstruction. Our training director Naomi O’Hara, is a national trainer for medical tattooing and trains nurses at The Royal Marsden Hospital. She uses a variety of pigments to recreate Areola with a 3D effect. Areola reconstruction is usually the final stage of breast reconstruction which can assist in making a breast cancer patient feel whole again. This work of art provides a natural looking result. We want women to feel confident and empowered.
Popular social media sites including that of Facebook block Areola photographs branding them as ‘going against standards on nudity or sexual activity’ which subsequently puts the user in ‘Facebook Jail’. Many of our students post photos demonstrating an Areola reconstructions on clients. Not only do these photos display artistic work but also aim to show those who have suffered with Breast Cancer that they can get their confidence back. We are using the slogan #PowerNotPorn to put pressure on those at Facebook for blocking these images.
We are leading the way and have therefore designed t-shirts in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October to not only raise awareness but to hopefully stop Facebook blocking photos that are posted in connection with such a serious and beautiful topic. Please support our #PowerNotPorn movement by purchasing one of our t-shirts available on our website (www.theclinicalacademy.com/pos-material/t-shirt-wear-it-pink-breast-cancer-awareness) with proceeds going to ‘Wear It Pink’ charity. Once you have your t-shirt, please take a photo and post on Facebook and/or Instagram with the hashtag #PowerNotPorn to raise awareness and to spread our movement in aid of such an important charity.
