Why is skincare so important in winter?

After a summer in the sun (hopefully), you might notice new dark spots or uneven tones on your skin. That's sun damage people, otherwise known as pigmentation. Although it can be caused by a host of aggressors; UV rays are the usual suspect. Winter is the best time to tackle it, as you are less likely to be sunbathing, but also have enough time to remedy the issue before the next holiday.

Just like the clothes we wear, our skincare routine and the products we use should be adjusted depending on the time of year. Skin becomes drier in cold weather, especially if it's windy, as it is not able to produce as much of our natural oils. Take advantage of this cooler weather by layering your products to get the most out of them.

If you are just starting your skincare journey or want to invest bit by bit (we get it!), then your ‘go to’ starter products should always be a cleanser, serum and SPF. Retinol is also a product that you will see amazing results with, so if you can, go for this too.

So, here’s some information about our DNA Skincare products, what they do and how best to use them.

Spotless Glycolic & Salicylic Cleanser (Day, Night)

Start your day with a fresh, clean base and exfoliate off any dead skin cells. This Spotless Cleanser removes impurities and any excess oil leaving your skin squeaky clean.

We recommend you apply this dry (I know it sounds strange!) by pumping a couple of drops on your fingers and rubbing into the area, leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing off. We promise you’ll love how clean your skin feels after.

Face Off Gentle Cleanser (Day, Night)

If your skin is more sensitive, our Face Off Cleanser is gentler than Spotless. It contains natural skin-calming properties and fruit extracts and smells amazing as it contains sweet orange oil.

Give Me HydrAtion (Anytime)

For those seeking hydration, after cleansing, lock in the moisture with our Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Give Me HydrAtion. This ultra-low molecular weight complex will sink into your skin and work immediately for up to 72 hours. It is water-based rather than oil so you will feel hydrated rather than leaving a greasy residue.

Even oily skin types need moisture to balance the skin's natural oils and avoid the overproduction of oils. 

C Fix +10% or C Fix +20% Vitamin C (Day)

Follow with a Vitamin C serum, an essential in any skincare routine. Its benefits include evening out skin tone, improving skin firmness, reducing age spots and pigmentation and beautiful-looking skin in general! A serum is far more concentrated than a moisturiser alone plus C-Fix has the added benefit of being an antioxidant.

Available in 10% for those new to using a Vitamin C, or with more sensitive skin, and a higher concentration of 20% for those used to using this product - it is a must-have for all skin types!

Eye Wonder (Day, Night)

Don’t forget your eyes! This intensive eye serum actively works to rejuvenate and repair the signs of ageing. Containing a unique blend of ingredients including vitamins to hydrate and lactic acid which has gentle resurfacing properties to diminish fine lines and the appearance of crows’ feet. It is also an eye cream that doubles up as a primer for your winter makeup base!

Sun Always Shines (Anytime)

If there is one piece of advice we could offer, it would be to ALWAYS use an SPF!
It’s not just for summer, we need protection from UVB and UVA rays all year round. UVB rays are the ones that burn our skin in the summer and UVA rays can penetrate your skin more deeply all year round, causing your skin cells to age prematurely.

We love this tinted SPF product as our last layer of protection but also to even out skin tones, to help make you look fresh and dewy.

Rewind 0.5% or 1% Retinol (Night)

Retinol is a miracle in a bottle! During sleep, your skin's blood flow increases and the organ rebuilds its collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles and age spots.  So, make each night count! It’s a stabilised form of Vitamin A which increases cell turnover, minimises pores and reduces fine lines and wrinkles as well as pigmentation.

Before going to bed, wash your face with Spotless Glycolic Cleanser (or Face Off if you're the sensitive type) to remove leftover makeup and pollutants which could irritate your skin. Apply Rewind to boost your skin's turnover while you sleep. If you are new to retinol or have sensitive skin, start with 0.5%. If your skin can tolerate it, go for the 1%. Remember that retinol migrates, so steer clear of the eye area to avoid irritation.

As well as looking after the skin on your face, don't forget to give your neck and chest the same treatment as you give your face, as these areas are often exposed too.  We even love these products on the backs of our hands!

Lip Service (Anytime)

Don’t forget your lips - they particularly get a battering in winter, so they need extra attention!

Lip Service contains natural conditioning agents to soothe and calm with sources of vitamins B and E to hydrate and help increase cell proliferation. It also prevents further lip ageing with antioxidant and anti-enzymatic properties.

Lip Nooky (Anytime)

We also like a bit of fun in our skincare range! This is an intensely nourishing lip plumper with collagen-stimulating peptides. This powerful vasodilator encourages blood flow to enhance and volumise lips. It is packed full of hydrating and protecting ingredients to help improve the shape, volume, tone, texture, and condition of the lips. It can be used with or without lip fillers for a near-instant improvement on demand!

Deep & Meaningful (Anytime)

Lastly, we can’t forget to pamper ourselves now and again… You can use this face mask once a week to deep cleanse, brighten and remove any stubborn pollution build-up. It contains activated coconut charcoal which is known for its detoxifying benefits and Kojic acid, a natural ingredient proven to help lighten and clear the skin, leaving a youthful complexion. Apply generously on your face and neck, light those candles, sink into that bath and relax - you deserve it!
